Cahuita de Talamanca

We set off bright an early after a quick dip in the pool to cross the mountainous range of windy roads on our way to the Caribbean Coast and laid back village of Cahuita.

We got there pretty hungry so stopped for a bit of local food and a couple drinks just off the high street...

As we waited for the rain to stop we ordered a few more...

...and then eventually made our way to our bungalow (www.bungalowsache.com) just bordering Cahuita's national park...

... plenty of things to be seen out here... in fact you could spot endless crabs of every possible colour just footsteps from our bungalows.. and at time inside our bunglow too!!

Turrialba's attractions...

...Costa Rica has plenty of amusing details about it... ladybirds, grasshoppers, flowers & plants and a whole load of tropical colours everywhere!!  We took a dive at the local botanical gardens to look at several beautiful specimen of all sorts!!

I sure haven't seen a grasshopper than big before... have you!?

And check out all of those fruits!!  They're soo different to the ones we have back home!

Hey!  These flowers are growing upside down!!

A white moth!!?

I even got bit by a tiny ant WITH TEETH!

Let me get prepare some weapons in case I encounter anymore!

Come on folks.. catch me if you can!!

Rush hour in Turrialba... without the rush though!

In a few years we should come back here and have a go at the white water rafting down the canyons... apparently it's only just down that stream of water!!

Hacienda Real - Costa Rica Coffee

Today's morning itinerary was a rather unusual one.  A deep dive in a Costa Rican coffee plantation and production estate: Hacienda Real.

All of those morning coffees we enjoy back at home in our slick Nespresso machine never really posed many questions before in my life.  Stick the capsule in the machine.  Press the button.  Add sugar (as you wish).  Coffee served...

Not quite I now know.  The best and most interest comes well before all of that.

Coffee comes from a plant just like these ones.. those green/red things are indeed coffee beans!!  They are like gold... at least the good ones and most precious varieties.. a bit like the good grapes stood to precious wines in Burgundy!

One they are picked and their skins are removed you end up with "naked" coffee beans just like this...

... which are then put down to dry in natural ways (simply lied down on the floor) or more using more ingenious and costly (but more efficient) techniques....

... and then a time comes when the coffee is ready to be tasted carefully in the "American" coffee style, no espresso style my dear European friends.  Grind the coffee & add water and the coffee experts can tell by inhaling the smell whether this is a "grand cru" or not which then in turn defines who those coffee beans go out to and at what price!

Here is Mamma having a go!!

Pretty fascinating stuff don't you think?  All those slick nespresso capsules and coffees served in cafes and restaurants worldwide are sourced thanks to beans grown and processed in the middle of nowhere.. in fact right here!!

Waking up to the sound of unusual birds..

... despite having gone to bed late for any standards, I woke up well before sun rise as did Mamma and Dadda.. our body clocks were still connected with Central European Time!!

As light eventually crept into our rooms at the sound of thousands of unusual bird sounds, we looked out at the horizon we were marvelled at the incredible richness of nature around us!!

Take a look for yourselves!

Costa Rica Jet Lag

...we don't like things easy in the Mochi Sismondi family so our holiday starts with a bit of a hike west...

a first stop in Madrid for a bit of lunch...

a film or two on the flight with a bit of drawing in between naps..

and eventually after landing in San Jose we drove another couple hours towards Turrialba for a spot of dinner before hitting the sack... must say I do feel the jet lag somehow!!

Radunata a Testaccio
